HALI team members Jonna Mazet, Woutrina Miller, Rudovick Kazwala, and David Wolking traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in mid November to participate in the PREDICT project Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting was the first opportunity for PREDICT’s partners (UC Davis, Global Viral Forecasting Initiative, Wildlife Conservation Society, and EcoHealth Alliance) to gather together for information sharing, planning, and global project coordination. Attending the Annual Meeting were Country and Regional Coordinators from PREDICT sites in Latin America, West and East Africa, and Southeast Asia, as well as key members of the Modeling, Surveillance, and Capacity Building teams.
The Annual Meeting also marked the initiation of regional cooperation between the HALI project’s Tanzania team, and the PREDICT teams in Uganda and Rwanda, as Professor Kazwala engaged Country Coordinators Benard Ssebide and Julius Nziza of Uganda and Rwanda in discussions on laboratory networking and surveillance training. The PREDICT East Africa regional teams are looking forward to further discussions on laboratory assistance and collaborations in 2011, as PREDICT’s pathogen testing and diagnostic teams prepare for site visits to the region in late February/March.
